Perennial contenders Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have both been included among the finalists, alongside Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. Having already won the Uefa Goal of the Season award, Messi is nominated after scoring 51 goals last for Barcelona last season as the club went on to claim a domestic double.
